The city should review how much the Lake Tahoe Unified School District is paying it for police services, South Lake Tahoe Councilman Bill Crawford urged at Tuesday's city council meeting.

Under a contract with the city, the school district pays about $34,000 per year for a school resource officer. The amount equals about half the officer's salary for the nine months school is in session, according to Police Chief Terry Daniels.

The school district's cost for the resource officer was a "cut-rate price" for an "excellent service," Crawford said at the meeting.

Crawford said he spoke to police and learned the department responded to 571 events at the district's campuses in 2007.

Of these responses, 104 resulted in police reports, Crawford said.

The resource officer is used to respond to incidents at all the district's campuses when possible, according to Daniels.

A breakdown of how many times the school's resource officer was used to respond to these incidents was not immediately available, Daniels said.

While saying the school district's contract could be reviewed by the city council when it expires in June, Daniels noted the importance of keeping an officer assigned to the schools.

"The safety of the schools is a high priority for us," Daniels said.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District declined to comment without further information about Crawford's comments, according to Angie Keil, assistant to Superintendent James Tarwater.
