The Douglas County
Sheriff’s Office is offering self-defense
classes this week for female students at
Douglas High School.
Deputy Kevin Schaller, a certified defensive
tactics instructor for the sheriff’s office
and the Nevada State Police Officers Standards
and Training Academy, holds a 5th degree black
belt in Kempo Karate. He has more than 25
years of martial arts training and experience.
The self-defense class is to focus on
psychological factors and mental preparation,
personal safety, personal weapons and
instinctive movement, strategic targeting,
vulnerable targets of opportunity,
self-defense techniques against common
attacks, and what to do if an attack occurs.
The class was proposed following the kidnap,
sexual assault and murder of 19-year-old
Brianna Denison in Reno.
“In light of concern by Sheriff Ron Pierini
and the sheriff’s department for the safety of
young adult females, Deputy Schaller will be
instructing the classes through Wednesday,”
said sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Jim Halsey.
The 90-minute instruction will be offered
during physical education classes, and nearly
400 sophomores, juniors and seniors are
expected to participate.
A class also is to be offered after school
Wednesday for girls who not enrolled in
physical education.
